The Story of Song

IN THE BEGINNING, THERE WAS THE VOICE. The natural uninhibited need to use this instrument to express the inner feelings of her soul is what got this soulful artist started. Born in one of the then music capitals of the world, Detroit ,Michigan , otherwise known as “Motown”, Song was influenced by music all through her life. At the young age 19 Song moved to Austin ,Texas to attend Huston-Tillotson University. It was there on 6th street in Austin that Song experienced live music, singer/songwriters and performers. It was there that inspiration grew. She began to write and sing in secret. Fast forward nearly 8 years later, she wrote the lyrics to the 13 songs that would become the first cd entitled “In The Firplace” released in 1999. Her sultry, in-your-face vocal stylings is reminiscent of a young Dionne Warwick or Phyliss Hyman. Her energy and performance on stage reminds you of a young Chaka Khan.

After the release of her first album in Texas, Song moved to France where she participated in the recordings of several albums. “VOP Live at the Satin Doll” in 2003 was a live gospel concert recorded in Bordeaux ,France, with the group “Voices of Praise”. It was here in Bordeaux that Song created her first live band group and began touring the local jazz festivals. After a few years in Bordeaux Song made the move to Paris where her musical horizons expanded even more, giving her the opportunity to work with the local musicians. She soon released many featurings on albums such as “Street Soul”, “Just A Feeling”, “Deux Pieds Sur Terre”, and “Fillet of Soul Opus 2” to name a few. She has been on stage with the likes of Keziah Jones, Les Nubians, Manu Katche and Lisa Stansfield and many others. She has opened for Lil Brother, Bobby Lyle, Peabo Bryson and the late great Issac Hayes.

It was during a concert of Voices of Praise, the gospel group, that Song met Alex Tassel and Guillaume Naturel. One year and a half later they recorded and released the tune “If You Wanna Know” featuring Manu Katche on drums, and there began a musical friendship that few ever experience. They began recording other tunes together little by little over the course of a year in between gigging and working in other bands. A mutual bond was born and the songs became the life force of the album “Let Love Shine”.

“Let Love Shine” is an album of 13 songs with a mixture of light jazz and neo soul. The angst of love lost in “I Loved You” to the outrage of hate in “Stop spreading Hate” this album floats you along. Guiding you through a journey of beautiful melodies, catchy horn phrasing, and the stories in our lives, this album is smooth and jarring. It is definitely “grown folks music”!
